Pope Manufacturing Company is established.
1876
(ca.) Founded by Albert Pope, it is located initially at 597 Washington Street. A Brighton native and later a resident of Brookline, Pope comes to be called the “Father of American Bicycles,” when the company begins to manufacture Columbia bicycles in Hartford in 1877. The company moves to a new building (first) in Boston in 1891.*
